What a crying shame, 12 months after this thread was started, it looks like it's all over for HMV.
Around 4,500 jobs are at risk at the 90-year-old retailer after its board called in Deloitte as administrators following poor results over the crucial Christmas trading period

Use it or lose it - but it seems it is too late! Yet, another hole in the high street. Although I buy most CDs online, I also like to visit and buy from HMV.

Again, very sad. The first store opened in Oxford Street, and this link contains some very nostalgic images

I did hear that independent specialist records shops are opening in the US, that appeal to a niche market. Also, Bob Dylan has released just 100 copies of his new album, which have been hidden in specialist collectors' record shops. This is a great ploy to attract people back into these shops.

but the new strategy of turning the brand into a technology retailer and not a film and music one appears to be working.

Switching from film and music to "technology"..!! Why..?? What's the connection but..??

perhaps that most stores are losing out because people are buying online instead of actually going to a brick and mortar store to buy music or movies?

Seems HMV may have be thrown another lifeline, administrators are also allowing those who have gift vouchers to start using them again from tomorrow...

Looks like a bigger lifeline has been thrown!

Retail restructuring group Hilco UK has acquired the debt of HMV, effectively giving it control of the administrator-managed entertainment chain.

I'm glad HMV have been given a lifeline - I do buy music, DVDs etc online but I really enjoy going for a browse in HMV. Maybe that is the problem? Does everybody just browse HMV but not buy?

Hello Melanie

I bought 2 CDs last month, and the other half bought 15 SACDs last week, from HMV. I feel we are doing our bit

Although I get most of my stuff online, nothing beats going into a store like HMV and picking up a DVD box and reading what's on the back.

I can't remember a time when I actually bought a CD never mind bought from HMV. I download everything nowadays and I think this is going to be the way forward. It's also cheaper as there are no overheads of printing etc... Blackbusters are the same

when movies were expensive (
