Seven prisons are to close and two more will be partially shut in England. The Ministry of Justice said it would result in the loss of 2,600 places from "old and uneconomic" prisons and is expected to save

I think it makes sense personally, closing old Victorian prisons, and amalgamating into one modern purpose built facility. Lower overheads by having one site etc.

But no doubt in reality what will happen is the prisons will close and the new one won't be ready due to delays or budget problems

The way things are going this government will employ the prisoners to build a new prison, supervised by Group 4 and using cement that was nicked from a nearby local housing project that was closed down due to the lack of government funds.

Although a super prison would be much more cost effective, it comes with a lot of challenges. It seems that it's certainly not something that should be rushed into without consultation.

They are not, America tried it. Labour were going to build "3" Titan prisons until the Americans witnessed wholesale rioting, increased suicides, murder and mayhem. The prisons produced "harder" more aggressive and entrenched criminals who developed better networks within the prison system. Net result, increase in crime post release, this equates to a bigger police budget, more work for the Courts and now that the Probation Service has gone, even more work for G4S.
No conflict of interest there then?

Even more reason to get my wife's ink and toner business going....I guess have about 12 months before I get measured for my G4S uniform, I would like to tell them where to put it...

If you want to make prison work, you need to make them hell holes so that people don't want to go back. From what I've read people, having been jailed once, have no fear of returning as they know full well that they will be looked after better on the inside than what they will on the outside. Three meals a day, a choice of meals on the menu. Television, telephone, drugs, access to libraries, social workers, probation officers, religious preachers, gyms, snooker, table tennis, dental treatment, healthcare and a bed. You don't get this at your local Travel Lodge apart from the bed and television....

Oh don't get me going on that one, I spend a lot of my time on the wings listening to serving prisoners moaning and whinging about conditions and the lack of any meaningful stimulus, how unfair the judicial system process is and why it is pointless locking them up. Had a few who openly accept that they get locked up over winter because its cheaper for them! One inmate told me he uses prison to give himself a break form his family because they all do his head in...Chris Grayling however wants to build titan prisons (despite America scrapping the idea) and he wants all short term prisoners to be supervised by tree hugging do-gooders who will work for
