Seems after years of shoulder sloping by internet providers the entertainment industry finally may get some support in the fight to combat illegal downloads.

Well when i say help, seems its a far cry from the fines and strong warnings and access to the database so the rights holders could issue fines, instead ISP's will send warning letters known as "alerts" . The first batch due to be sent to offenders sometime in 2015.

Not sure what happens if you ignore these alerts, or indeed the ramification behind getting one, time will tell but you can bet that the Entertainment Industry will keep pushing for tougher penalties!

I know a lot of people who have downloaded illegally, I think it simply is because it's easy to get away with. Now if these warnings are ignored and people start to see the ramifications I think there will be a decline in the number of illegal downloaders. But while the threat of action is just that, a threat then I don't think it will change

Agree with Joe, it's all about perceived consequences. Putting morality to one side, ie theft is theft etc..  If you think there is a genuine risk you will get caught and that will mean a big fine or worse, then you won't do it

But while people can hide behind proxies or do whatever they do these days to remain invisible, then I suspect a lot of this will be hot air.

nope I dont

However I think the authorities can only start to look at large scale, as this is the most productive way of catching crims.

Lets face it to arrest and process everyone that has/ does copy illegally then there would be lots of arrests.

I think that when there are services like Spotify or Netflix / Amazon Prime available, downloading music or films could not be justified. Most of these services are free with ads or charge a small monthly fee, whilst providing top quality service, without having to wait and search for files of dubious quality.

When it comes to apps, I think the choice is clear - pay for the packages (especially if you use them to earn / organise your business) or look for a free/open source alternatives.

However, many companies and artists choose to offer their tracks/videos for free, putting product placement there or an ad on website. Many will complain about these, too, but the artists have to earn for a living as well, don't they?
