This was one of those Seth Godin blog posts which triggered a light bulb and I realised I'm guilty of this 

The squeaky wheel problem

"It seems to make sense to prioritize in order of priority.

Do the urgent stuff first. Deal with the cranky customer who's about to walk out, the disenchanted and difficult employee who hasn't had the right sort of guidance (lately), the partner who is stomping his foot.

The problem with this rational priotization is that it means that the good customers, the valuable employees and the long-suffering but loyal partners are neglected. And they realize that they should either get squeaky or leave.

If the only way to get your attention is to represent a risk, people will figure that out.

(The other problem is that you end up spending all your time with cranky, disenchanted, difficult people who are stomping their feet.)"

So are we all encouraging people to be cranky and vocal, or are you enlightened and park the grumpy people?

Hmmm that is true, it's why if you're buying a house you pester the heck out the agents until they prioritise your house, just to get rid of you! Of course if you felt you were getting the best service to start with and people were honest about delays and realistic about deadlines then you wouldn't feel the need to do it. It does seem to be the way of the world unfortunately. Like in school the average, good students often get virtually ignored and the 'naughty' ones that play up get the majority of attention and even trips out to help them deal with behaviour etc. (I'm not commenting on if that approach is right or wrong).

I try and deal with my clients in the order they book but to be fair if someone really has an urgent piece of work I will do it before others. Not to the detriment of set deadlines though. When I worked in advertising it was all deadlines but the awkward clients who liked their work done straight away did often get priority as you had to keep the money-making accounts happy.
