Resisting Twitter

I was reading another thread that twitter isnt any good for SEO (phew, expect a few more questions when I get to that!)

So Ii honestly cant see the point of twitter? I've looked at it, and it just seems to be full of rubbish. Everyone seems to be concerned about telling everyone else how great they are, but no seems to be actually listening?

Or have I got it wrong? I know people say they get lots of visitors to their sites, but is this a vanity thing, or do these visitors actually do or buy anything when they get there? What good is having 500 extra visitors if they dont do anything?

I can't seem to get excited by twitter, but I keep getting told how critical it is for a new business. Im wondering if it is only relevant to people like webdesigners, and maybe not more offline type businesses?

Twitter is a community, but you will not see or feel it until you have hammered it for a while, once you have a handful of followers, and you retweet their articles, offers etc, then they will offer you the same courtesy, you cannot see it from the outside looking in.

98% of the people I follow are not 'Web Designers' and gain plenty of work through Twitter, not meaning to be rude, but if you had worked at it for 3 months with no results, you would have a valid point, but I can say with all my heart, if you give it a good shot instead of a 'might as well' you will see more on it, Millions and millions of people must be doing something right.

You just need to ensure you do a bit of everything until you find what works best for you, ie Forums, Blogging, WebSite, Twitter etc.

Hope this helps

well that told me

I will give it a go, but it does appear to be full of rubbish and spam. My point really was, is it worth the time and energy. Clearly you think so, and i appreciate it may have millions of users, but I do wonder how many of those actually get any business benefit from it.

Once I have become and incessant twitterer, I shall review my findings, and see if what I alreadt suspect is actually the case

My point being, that if you go in with that view, I do not fancy your chances, maybe better focusing on something you believe in.

Hi Paula

I used to be pretty negative about Twitter, but Kip's right, you can't take a negative attitude until you've tried it out.

There is a lot of noise and spam on there, but you tune that out. Develop a following, in your case I assume around interior design, right some articles or a blog, and then tweet those articles to your receptive readers.

It doesn't happen over night, but you do get there. Regarding time and effort, only you can be the judge of that, but the beauty of things like this, you can do it over a glass of wine in the evening instead of watching the goggle box

Lets face it, for us business owners, 9 - 5 days disapeared a long time ago

agreed, but I would urge you to give it a go and put any preconceptions to one side.

But as Kip says, there are plenty of things out there to focus and channel our energies.

I have to agree with Steve here I never really understood twitter until I started using it for business leads and then it clicked for me and it is very powerfull. you can see immediate results.

Just be yourself as much as you can, whilst dropping work stuff in too, people like real tweets not too work related, follow me and i will follow you back and help where I can, but you will have to put up with my ramblings, offers and blogging regarding my diet for charity!
