Twitters bad SEO strategy

Interesting blog from SEOmoz

Twitter seems to duplicate it's content across different URL's, watering down any SEO value.

eg, it's content is spread across http and https, URLs can also be indexed with or without # sign.

Although there seems to be no clear answer, suggestions are given at the end of the post. Personally I'd go with the authors suggestion about using what twitter defines as a canonical tag:

https
non-www
no "at" sign (@)
minuscule letters
no slash at the end
no hashbang (/#!/)

Be interesting to hear any thoughts from any SEO boffins? Do you agree, is this something we need to worry about?

I primarily use twitter for discounts, blog updates or articles that have been written. I think the real SEO value is people then bookmarking the the information you share via twitter. If you can write about something that really interests your followers you could get a lot of retweets, lots of bookmarks and literally give your SEO a huge boost in 1 swift go (obviously the benefits of this will take longer to appear)

But as far as I know, Twitter doesn't contribute a significant value on SEO. What it best does is traffic generation.

I think twitter is helpful to get traffic. But it does not help to get good ranking or good position in SERP. You can also use to twitter to get indexing any new Web page or website.

Twitter is indeed a good way of promoting your material and gaining traffic, the best bit is looking for those retweet that puts you in front of new potential customers

Hi,

I think Twitter helps as a function of our link building efforts. Twitter will help us build relationships with bloggers and site owners who may be interested in linking.
We will have to follow Twitter Rules tips to avoid sending duplicate content to Twitter.
