Summer Teacher Strikes

I see on the news we have potential teacher strikes to look forward to courtesy of the National Union of Teachers.

I sympathise that teachers have a hard job role, and if it's true primary teachers are working 60 hour weeks, then that needs addressing. But I didn't warm to the NUT Chairwoman on Breakfast news this morning who came across as very militant, and the message appeared to be if the Govt doesn't agree to our demands, then it's strike.

Seemed like a flashback to disputes of old, and hopefully won't lead to other Unions starting to flex their collective muscles.

I can see sympathy evaporating quickly when parents start getting penalised, imho...

Descending from a long line of teachers, (Gran was a head, Dad was a deputy, aunt a year head & little brother on the management team at his school) one has to be a bit careful on what is said.

I am a Governor (vice chair as it happens) at a local school and I know how hard the staff & team work but that doesn't mean that they can just spit their dummies because they don't get their own way.

I'm against strikes - teachers seem to be constantly complaining about this & that - bottom line is if you don't like the long holidays, don't want a nice pension at the end of your working life (i accept that its part contributed by them) then come and work in the private sector - 25 days holiday a year & your own private pension to sort.

The problem with teachers striking this time of year, is that it will no doubt effect children taking their exams, I assume they will now be doing their mocks leading up to summer exams.During the 70s they were forever on strike so as a kid it never bothered me, but I think nowadays teachers have a lot tougher time than their predecessors, have little or no respect given to them, have very little power / authority over the children. Have multilingual classes all at various different levels of education. Yet their expected to manage a classroom for a pittance. I wouldn't want the job.

Thanks,

Teachers pay used to be down in line with other Public sectors but their pay has increased somewhat since my father retired some 20 years ago.

Still don't want their job though, but those going in to the industry know what they are going in to.

I have always said if you don't like a job, do something about it!

After today, I think I'd rather have a teachers than a tube strike....

What they should have done is switch the electric tracks off, given all the business people a torch, and let them walk to work
